We road tripped through Sikkim and our journey was filled with stunning landscapes, sipping chai straight out of some tea gardens, living with the locals, birding in hidden forest trails, chasing sunsets over mountains, hogging on local food, lots of dancing in the cold (erm...shivering!!), monastery hopping and seeking some much deserved tranquility!
Our journey starts at Siliguri. Once we meet you at Siliguri, we drive down to Gangtok, our first destination on the itinerary. We settle into our comfy hotels and chill this evening, exploring the quaint town, going out on food trails in the bustling markets etc. Chill Day!
Our journey into the cold starts today as we drive to the China Border at Nathula Pass. Hoisted high at 14,140 ft above sea level, this one is an offshoot of the ancient Silk Road. We also visit the freezing Tsomgo lake (Changu Lake) at 12,313 ft above sea level and visit the Baba Mandir View Points today.
Today we drive down to Pelling, a little township located in West Sikkim. We will be driving through Temi Tarku and its famous tea gardens, the mighty Teestha River, and some sleepy little hamlets enroute. We will also be monastery hopping today, so get ready for a cultural extravaganza enroute!
Our mornings start with the Golden hour atop the mighty Kanchendzonga mountains. Post breakfast we head out for a little hike to Rabdentse ruins and Sanghacholing Monastery before ending up for lunch with the monks at Pemeyangtse. We head to Yuksom in the evening.
The morning at Yuksom starts with birdsongs and ends with hymns being chanted at the ancient Karthog monastery. So while in Yuksom, we set ourselves to tune in with this leisurely lifestyle. The day ends back at our homestay with a little bonfire being lit, some stories being shared, lots of good food and great music!
Post a scrumptious breakfast, we head out to Darjeeling. Our noon is spent in Darjeeling sipping some steaming hot tea, savoring some momos and checking out its markets. We head back to Siliguri today. The trip ends at Siliguri!
